PANEL 1:
Monetizing Digital Content:
Commerce Strategies for Content Owners and Merchants
The Music Industry Perspective
As
digital distribution increasingly becomes the mode of choice for music
consumers, the music industry and their retail partners are
experimenting with new digital business models and commerce strategies.
While the 99-cent per-track model has seen early success, many in the
industry favor more flexible pricing and greater profit margins
subscription services provide. As legal peer-to-peer emerges as a viable
distribution strategy, new commerce models are being introduced,
including awards and points systems that reward consumers who make song
recommendations to friends. This panel will address commerce strategies
for digital music with a focus on consumer response and emerging
business models. What are the likely catalysts to creating a vibrant
digital music market?

PANEL 2:
Monetizing Digital Content:
Commerce Strategies for Content Owners and Merchants
The Game Industry Perspective
As games become
increasingly popular among a wide variety of demographic groups, the
game industry is experimenting with new commerce strategies, including
micropayments models, subscription plans and online auctions. In April,
Sony Online Entertainment, the developer of massively multiplayer online
games like EverQuest and Star Wars Galaxies, unveiled Station Exchange,
an auction site that allows players to spend real money on virtual
weapons, armor, coins and new, high-level characters, making it the
first major U.S. publisher to facilitate the buying and selling of
virtual goods. Others in the online games industry are experimenting
with subscription and pay-to-play models as casual games become more
popular and reach new demographics. This panel will discuss business
models and commerce strategies for games.

Monetizing Digital Content:
Commerce Strategies for Content Owners and Merchants
Television & Broadband Perspectives
In the past few
months, ABC/Disney and NBC announced that they will make series
programming including "Lost" and "Law & Order" available on video iPods
for $1.99 per show. In two separate announcements, CBS and Comcast and
NBC Universal and DirecTV announced that they will allow viewers to
purchase current primetime broadcast hits such as "CSI: Crime Scene
Investigation" and "Law & Order" for 99 cents just hours after they air
for free. There is much speculation that these deals are just the
beginning as the industry takes steps to build new revenue streams. This
panel will discuss digital commerce opportunities for the television
industry, including programming for non-traditional platforms including
VOD, broadband and wireless.
