The Music Industry Perspective
As digital distribution increasingly becomes the mode of choice for music consumers, the music industry and their retail partners are experimenting with new digital business models and commerce strategies. While the 99-cent per-track model has seen early success, many in the industry favor more flexible pricing and greater profit margins subscription services provide. As legal peer-to-peer emerges as a viable distribution strategy, new commerce models are being introduced, including awards and points systems that reward consumers who make song recommendations to friends. What are the likely catalysts to creating a vibrant digital music market?
